Fine-Tuning Our Faith

Fine-Tuning Our Faith

Few inventions in modern history have had as profound of an impact on the world population as the automobile. For instance, trips that used to take days on foot or horseback can be completed in several hours, and families that were once separated by hundreds or even thousands of miles can be reunited in just a day or two.

Yet, despite the beneficial role that cars play in our lives, they’re not perfect. Sometimes the battery dies, or the engine overheats, or a tire has a blowout. When these more noticeable things happen, we know that we must take the car to have it serviced. However, we may occasionally miss small signs that a car is headed for disaster. Perhaps the connections on the battery begin to corrode, or there is a small oil leak, or the tire’s tread begins to wear down. If we learn to pay attention to the minor details, we may be able to prevent the bigger problems from occurring.

Our lives as Christians are no different. We work extra hard to weed out the “significant” sins like profanity, idolatry, and impure thoughts, but we may overlook “smaller” sins like judgmentalism, pride, grumbling. This is an unhealthy perspective because the truth is that what we consider “small” or “insignificant” sins are actually symptomatic of larger issues, and if left unchecked, they can cause some major problems in our lives.

In 2 Corinthians 13:5, Paul urged his fellow Christians with the following words: “Examine yourselves, to see whether you are in the faith. Test yourselves. Or do you not realize this about yourselves, that Jesus Christ is in you?—unless indeed you fail to meet the test!”

Have you tested your faith lately? You may find that you are in need of some fine-tuning.
